Books Between Kids Holiday Book Sorting

Please join the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation this holiday season as we build home libraries for children in need. Join us in sorting books at the Books Between Kids warehouse. Books Between Kids is a non-profit organization founded in 2012 to serve Houston’s at-risk children by providing them with books to build their own home libraries. 

This event is family friendly, as we welcome children as young as five with adult supervision. Take time from your holiday activities to give the gift of literacy to Houston's at-risk children! 

As a volunteer you will help inventory, sort, and box children's books, preparing them for distribution to low-income HISD elementary students. To sign up for this event, click here.

Holiday Volunteering at the Book Warehouse

9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Spread holiday cheer and support your local library by volunteering with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and the Friends of the Houston Public Library at the Book Warehouse during this season of giving! No prior training/experience is needed; guidance will be provided at the Book Warehouse. 

This opportunity is family friendly as we welcome all volunteers ages 13 and up.

Duties: Scanning donated and discarded books using Neatoscan scanner, Sorting and moving books into appropriate area (listing, research, recycle, etc). General warehouse projects such as breaking down boxes, moving books to other areas, sorting books for community book sales, and listing books on Amazon.

Holiday Lunch Packing

 Kids’ Meals Inc. seeks to end childhood hunger by delivering free, healthy meals to the doorsteps of Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children facing debilitating hunger due to poverty. Please join the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation as we help pack lunches and toys that will be distributed to children at a holiday celebration put on by Kids’ Meals Inc. Tacky Sweater Christmas Book Drive

Location: Station 3

Join our Young Professionals Group for our 3rd annual Tacky Holiday Sweater social and service event at Station 3. Throughout the evening, young professionals will mix and mingle while bundling donated books that will be distributed to children served at Kids’ Meals Inc.’s holiday celebration. Kids’ meals Inc., is a Houston-area nonprofit that delivers nutritious meals to the doors of preschool children of low-income families, free of cost, every weekday, year round. Literacy in the Bag 2016

Literacy in the Bag is a book drive event hosted by Texas Tamale Company and iWRITE to encourage and foster the growth of literacy in Houston. With the help of our literacy partners, we are giving back to the Houston community to build a better future. All collections will be given to Title I elementary and middle schools along with the Friends of the Houston Public Library.

Via Colori

Location: Hermann Square at City Hall

Celebrate art and support at Via Colori- The Street Painting Festival that supports The Center for Hearing and Speech, a local nonprofit that services children with hearing loss.. Over 200 artists convert the streets of Downtown Houston at Hermann Square at City Hall into an outdoor art gallery. Big Brothers Big Sisters Country Run

Join The Corner Store Country Run in Katy, TX as an event volunteer! It’s an awesome family-friendly 5K Run/Walk that features fun, farm-themed obstacles and has a country fair at the finish line complete with food, drinks, live music and carnival games. The event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters! All volunteers will receive a t-shirt and backpack along with free access to the post-race country fair complete with live music, games and great food. Jungle Book Gala

The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation Young Professionals’ Group will host our Second Annual Jungle Book Gala at the beautiful Dunlavy in Buffalo Bayou Park, sponsored by Central Houston Cadillac. Chairing our event this year will be Lizzie Andrews. We are thrilled to announce that NBA All Star Dwight Howard and International Stylist and Event Designer Lucas Somoza have joined the literacy cause as our Honorary Chairmen.  Join other young professionals and those young at heart for this exciting event featuring dancing, drinks, light bites, and a fabulous silent auction!
