Rita Cofield

As the eldest of three children born of a teenage mother and raised by her grandparents, Rita is a preschool teacher and the primary caregiver of her youngest brother. She became responsible for her brother because she believed her mother was not providing him with the best environment. By taking her brother in, she was able to provide him stability. “He struggled at first to learn how to read, but by working with him, I have been able to instill a love of reading in him.” “I love reading and literacy. Just picking up a book is very important. I can visualize anything…its limitless. If there were no books in the world, then I feel imagination would be lost, because I use the words in books to paint the picture that no one else has provided me.”
