Maria Trevino moved from the city of Reynosa,Mexico to Houston when upon entering the 3rd grade. After arriving in the U.S., Maria never had the privilege to attend school again. She never learned how to speak English, read or write. She began working for Levi's Jeans company, but then was forced to quit after she developed diabetes.
After having four kids, Maria knew that she wanted all of her children to become literate in both English and Spanish to ensure that they would have better opportunities in the world than she had. Since Maria does not know any English, she cannot pursue any type of business or pay the bills.
“I can read little for myself, so my daughter helps me with everything,” Maria said.
Maria believes that she is too old to learn now.
