I spotted Melissa across the room logging into her computer station with one hand and feeding her daughter cookies with the other. She looked a little busy but I approached her anyway and she had a lot to share. Melissa grew up in California, “got into some trouble” and spent time in a group home before relocating to Houston to live with her Grandmother.
“When I was younger I had a speech problem and this lady used to come to my house and help me” As an adult Melissa does not enjoy reading. “I just don’t like it” She has access to the library but says “I don’t like these types of books I like books I can relate to in my life, like Omar Tyree.” Melissa says she sometimes reads with her 11 month old daughter. Dora books and the bible are her favorite things to read aloud.
“I want to one day own my own spa” says Melissa and she is working hard to complete online classes while also raising an 11 month old baby. She utilizes the computer and internet services that Harris County Public Library provides to reach her goal. She has some advice to people who are not completing studies after high school…”No excuses, she says. “Do what you have to do!”
