2nd Annual Community Book Drive

February 21 - March 2, 2018

As stated in Houston's Literacy Crisis: A Blueprint for Community Action, "Research has shown there is only one book available for every 300 children in low-income areas, as opposed to 13 books, on average, in homes of middle-and-high income children." Books are a luxury that many families cannot afford, yet they are essential to a child's development.

Without access to age-appropriate reading materials, children are already behind when they start the school year. In order to break the cycle of low literacy within families and reduce the performance gap, which constrains the education system and fuels the achievement gap in later years, we must work together to provide Houston's children with adequate literacy resources.

The Ladies for Literacy Guild of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation is holding its 2nd Annual Community Book Drive from February 21 through March 2 to stock the Curiosity Cruiser, a mobile library operated by the Harris County Public Library to serve disadvantaged children across greater Houston. Join us in reaching our goal of collecting 50,000 new and like-new books for children and youth ages 4 through 13. Simply drop off your books at one of the designated drop-off locations below or make a monetary donation in support of the Annual Community Book Drive here. Participating in this event is a simple way for you to help a child have a brighter future through the power of literacy.

We wish to thank St. Anne School Foundation and Community for sponsoring the 2018 Community Book Drive and Half Price Books and Barnes and Noble for donating books to give this year’s event an early jumpstart for success.
