Ladies for Literacy Guild

Ladies for Literacy is a service-oriented guild comprised of more than 300 prominent and influential women from across Houston. Committed to carrying forth Barbara Bush’s legacy in literacy, the dynamic group plays an integral role in the Foundation by making valuable connections, hosting an annual book drive to support local programs and families in need, and by hosting an annual sell-out Power of Literacy luncheon.

Young Professionals Group

Young Professionals Group (YPG) engages the next generation of Houston’s leaders in the literacy cause. Comprised of over 200 service-minded members, the group’s signature initiatives include small-group, reading mentorship programs, an annual Tacky Sweater Party through which they distribute more than 1,000 home libraries to preschool aged children, the annual Jungle Book Gala, and bi-monthly networking events.

Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation works diligently to expand the capacity of school districts, libraries and community-based literacy service providers to serve people in need through volunteerism and service. is Houston’s go-to platform for volunteers to search volunteer opportunities, form volunteer teams, track and print transcripts of service hours, and much more. 


Power of Literacy Luncheon

The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation’s Ladies for Literacy Guild is excited to announce that Oscar-winning actress, singer and author, Julie Andrews, will be featured along with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, at the fourth annual Power of Literacy Luncheon. Chaired by Lilly Andress and Vicki West, Andrews and Hamilton will participate in a moderated conversation as part of the program. The event will take place Friday, October 25 at The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown.


Jungle Book Gala

The Young Professionals Group hosts the swanky, black-tie Jungle Book Gala, which benefits the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. The charitable event caters to the young and young-at-heart and features high-profile Honorary Chairs such as Dwight Howard, a previous Houston Rockets’ star, Houston Texans’ Whitney Mercilus, and Houston Astros Manager AJ Hinch and his lovely wife, Erin. The spirited evening also includes a silent auction, light dinner, dancing and live entertainment.
