Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation’s Third Annual Power of Literacy Luncheon Honors Former First Lady

Champions for literacy gathered at the Post Oak Hotel on October 23 for the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation’s third annual Power of Literacy luncheon, honoring the former First Lady. The grand lobby and ballroom of the hotel were decorated with giant balloons and each table was donned with bright, colorful flowers and featured an 18-inch cutout of Barbara Bush.

The George Hotel dedicates Texas Flag book wall to Barbara Bush: new Texas A&M hotel honors First Lady’s literacy efforts

Some 10,000 books with spines of red, white or blue are stacked floor to ceiling in an art installation in the entrance of The George hotel at Texas A&M University in College Station. Together they form a Lone Star flag that’s an homage to Texas authors as well as the late Barbara Bush, who championed literacy efforts since the 1980s when her husband, George H.W. Bush was vice president. Barbara Bush was 92 when she died April 17.

Proceeds from the event at The Post Oak advance the legacy of former first lady Barbara Bush by supporting literacy initiatives in Houston. In a fitting tribute to the beloved former first lady, a double strand of pearls will be available for raffle to the public and attendees.
