The Young Professionals Group (YPG) is an organization of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation formed in 2014 to engage the next generation of Houston’s leaders in the literacy cause. The YPG is comprised of a community of individuals who are service-minded and eager to make an impact in our city. Members are able to participate in networking and social events, serve in leadership roles, and volunteer in meaningful service activities that help make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children and their families.

Tacky Sweater and Book Drive: The YPG partners with Kids’ Meals, a local nonprofit providing free meals to children ages 4 and younger, to help build home libraries of children of poverty. Members dress in their tackiest holiday clothing and gather to have fun networking and wrapping donated books that are then given to children during a holiday celebration event hosted by Kids’ Meals.

Jungle Book Gala: Each year members of the Young Professionals Group host an annual Jungle Book Gala. Proceeds from this black tie fundraiser provides support for YPG social and service events and activities. Save the date for the 2017 Jungle Book Gala, September 22, 2017 at the Dunlavy. Whitney Mercilus, #59 of the Houston Texans, will serve as the Honorary Chair. Purchase tickets for the Jungle Book Gala now.

Read Aloud Month: National Read Aloud Month is held during March, and each year the YPG chooses a location to read aloud to area children. This event gives members an opportunity to interact with children and spread the word to families about the importance of reading aloud every day at least 15 minutes.  Each child is also able to select books to take home.
