The Young Professionals Group (YPG) is an organization of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation formed in 2014 to engage the next generation of Houston’s leaders in the literacy cause. The YPG is comprised of a community of individuals who are service-minded and eager to make an impact in our city. Members are able to participate in networking and social events, serve in leadership roles, and volunteer in meaningful service activities that help make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children and their families.
SIGNATURE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP ACTIVITIES
Read Aloud Month: National Read Aloud Month is held during March, and each year the YPG chooses a location to read aloud to area children. This event gives members an opportunity to interact with children and spread the word to families about the importance of reading aloud every day at least 15 minutes. Each child is also able to select books to take home.
Mentor Program: The YPG has partnered with Spring Branch ISD’s Treasure Forrest Elementary to create a mentor program where the YPG members get the opportunity to mentor young students. Members are able to read and do a variety of activities with kids and make a difference in our community! You can serve once a week or once a month, the program works with your schedule.
Jungle Book Gala: Each year members of the Young Professionals Group host an annual Jungle Book Gala. Proceeds from the gala provide support for YPG social and service events and activities, including home libraries for Houston-area disadvantaged children. The fourth annual Jungle Book Gala will be held Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Revaire, a beautiful new venue located in the heart of Houston. This year's Honorary Chairs are 2017 World Series Champion Houston Astros Manager A.J. and Erin Hinch, and co-chairs Amy & Kyle McCully and Morgan Stautzenberger & Cameron Stubbs.
Tacky Sweater Party and Book Drive: The YPG partners with Kids’ Meals, a local nonprofit providing free meals to children ages 4 and younger, to help build home libraries for children from economically disadvantaged households. Members dress in their tackiest holiday clothing and gather to have fun networking and wrapping donated books that are then given to children during a holiday celebration event hosted by Kids’ Meals.
